Miguel Uribe, the Senator & Colombian Presidential Hopeful, who passed away early Monday at the age of 39 — exactly two months after being shot in the head during a campaign rally.

Miguel Uribe, a rising star from the right-wing opposition Democratic Center party, was attacked on June 7 while delivering a speech in Bogotá.
The brazen shooting stunned the nation and left him fighting for his life at the capital’s Santa Fe Foundation Hospital, where supporters held vigils for weeks.
Over the weekend, doctors revealed that Uribe’s condition had worsened due to a severe hemorrhage in his central nervous system.

In the early hours of Monday, his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, shared the heartbreaking news on social media:
“I ask God to show me the way to live without you. Rest in peace, love of my life, I will take care of our children.”
Nation Reacts in Shock and Sorrow
Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe — no relation to Miguel — posted on X, saying:
“Evil destroys everything; they killed hope. May Miguel’s fight be a light that illuminates Colombia’s right path.”
International leaders also expressed condolences. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States stood with the Colombian people in both mourning and demanding justice.
The Investigation: Arrests, Plots, and International Help
Authorities have arrested six people in connection with the shooting, including two men accused of meeting in Medellín to plan the assassination.
The suspected gunman, just 15 years old, was arrested hours after the attack. In a video verified by Reuters, the teen claimed he had been hired by a local drug dealer.
Colombia’s Defense Minister has announced a reward of up to 3 billion pesos (about $740,000) for information on those behind the attack.
The U.S., U.K., and UAE are assisting in the investigation, as police continue to hunt for the “intellectual authors” of the crime.
A Life Marked by Tragedy and Determination
Miguel Uribe’s death adds another painful chapter to his family’s turbulent history. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in 1991 during a failed rescue after being kidnapped by Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel.
Despite these personal tragedies, Miguel Uribe rose quickly in politics. At just 25, he was elected to Bogotá’s city council, becoming a fierce critic of then-mayor — now President — Gustavo Petro.
In 2022, he led his party’s Senate slate with the slogan “Colombia First”, winning a seat in the chamber.
Miguel Uribe came from a politically influential family. His maternal grandfather, Julio César Turbay, served as Colombia’s president from 1978 to 1982. His paternal grandfather, Rodrigo Uribe Echavarría, once headed the Liberal Party.
He is survived by his wife, son, two stepdaughters, father, and sister.
